RESIN BOUND INSTALLS
Resin bound surfacing is SuDS-compliant because it’s permeable, meaning water drains through it rather than running off it.
Here is a simple breakdown:
1. Open, porous structure
In a resin bound system, each aggregate stone is fully coated in resin and then mixed together. When laid, the stones lock together with tiny gaps between them.
Those gaps allow rainwater to pass straight through the surface.
2. Water drains to the ground below
Instead of water pooling or flowing into drains (which can cause flooding), rain soaks through the resin bound layer and into:
-
a permeable sub-base, or
-
the natural ground beneath
This mimics how water drains through soil naturally — exactly what SuDS is designed to achieve.
3. Reduces surface water runoff
Because water infiltrates on-site, resin bound surfacing:
-
reduces flood risk
-
prevents overwhelming drainage systems
-
helps manage heavy rainfall more sustainably
4. Meets UK planning requirements
In the UK, SuDS compliance is key for driveways and paved areas, especially at the front of properties. Resin bound systems are commonly accepted by local authorities without the need for extra drainage (when installed correctly).
